The area of Mozambique was a Portuguese colony from the arrival of Vasco da Gama in 1498 until the independence in June 25, 1975.
The current provinces of Cabo Delgado and Niassa were managed by the royal Nyassa Company (Companhia do Nyassa) and called Nyassa and then then renamed as Portuguese East Africa. From this area were issued a total amount of 141 stamps, only some of which were available in circulation.
The curent provinces of Manica and Sofala in the years 1891-1941 were managed by the Company of Mozambique [Companhia de Moçambique] under the royal concession of the Portuguese colonies. The company has released in these years about 280 different postage stamps.
