Saar lies on the border of Germany and France. After the First World War and under the provisions of the Treaty of Versailles passed from the rule of the first Member State under the administration of the League of Nations, which established a post office there. In 1920 were was used the German postage stamps with overprint "SARRE" (the name of the area in French) and with blurred inscription "Deutsches Reich". The same has been done with stamps of Bavaria. Then was used an overprint with a name of the area in the German language "SAARGEBIET" and without deletion of the name of the German Reich. In 1921 stamps was issued with the inscription "SAARGEBIET." Then were changed the currency _ pfennig to francs and centimes. At the end of 1934, was issued a series _ overprinted "VOLKSABSTIMMUNG / 1935" due to the polebiscite at the beginning of 1935 which resulted in returning of the Saar to Germany and its postal system.
After World War II Saar was under French administration. In mid-1945, the Saar area was disconnected from the French occupation zone of Germany, creating Oberpostdirektion Saarland in Saarbrücken and was restored the functioning of the mail official and private In 1947 was issued postage stamps valid only for this area. Then the currency was changed from German to French. In 1947, France established a protectorate of Saarland, and the next year issued a series with the inscription "SAARPOST", in the following year  with the inscription "SAAR".
In 1955, Saarland returned under German administration as a result of the local plebiscite (referendum). Both inscriptions were used "Saarland" and "Deutsche Bundespost". In 1959, a last postage stamp was issued for the Saar, before began to used the regular stamp editions of the Federal Republic of Germany.
