The first stamps in the current Vietnam were introduced in 1862 by the French administration. Initially were used those stamps which was intended for the French colonies, then were used overprinted stamps and finally were stamps issued for French Indochina.
During Japanese occupation (1940-1945) weren't stamps from France, thus were printed at the place. Then were used the French colonial stamps and those issued by the Viet Minh guerrillas.
Since 1954, Vietnam and its post office was divided into the South (stamp printed in Western Europe) and North (printing in Eastern Europe). In 1976 Vietnam was unified, and since 1990 stamps are printed only locally.
