In 1490 Franz von Taxis on the orders of Maximilian I - the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire [Sacrum Romanum Imperium] - took care of transporting letters between the monarch's residences in Innsbruck and Brussels. In 1497, on behalf of the Emperor he started establishing the first postal system in Europe, replacing the ad hoc service for official mail. From 1650 they - as the first since Roman times - used to mail transport a kind of a horse vehicles, which name "coach" took its name from the Hungarian town of Kocs, from which its initially was setting off. Also from the family name are such terms as "taxi" and "taxes".
The representatives of the Thurn und Taxis dynasty acted superior post function until the end of the Empire in 1806. In 1815 they lost their monopoly after transfering by Napoleon the right to conduct postal services to the Confederation of the Rhine - in which were included this and others German Princely Houses.
On the first May 1850, the Thurn und Taxis postal administration joined the German-Austrian Postal Union [Deutsch-Österreichischer Postverein]. In 1852 the Thurn und Taxis has issued its own stamps, valid also in many others German states.
In 1866, after the victory of Prussia in the Austro-Prussian War [German.: Deutscher Krieg, Preußisch-Deutscher Krieg, Czech: Prussian-rakouské válka] the post of the Thurn und Taxis House was under Prussian postal administration.
